Governor Francis Nwifuru has sworn-in the newly elected 13 Local Government Area Chairmen for Ebonyi State with a warning that they should not allow opposition parties to overrun them in the build up to next year election.
Speaking at the ceremony in Abakaliki on Tuesday September 1, the Governor charged the helmsmen at the third tier of governance to brace up to the needs of the people.
He told them that as local government Chairmen everyone was watching them as they cannot afford to fail. He reminded them that the performance of the party in the 2027 general election would be tied to their performance.
Governor Nwifuru warned the chairmen against allowing opposition parties to beat them in the elections adding that such action would have consequences.
“As a LG Chairman if you like go and sleep so that another person will take over your house, you will not stop us from winning but when we win, you know we will win, we’ll remove you. It’s as simple as that,” the Governor stated”
He also announced the appointment of 10 Executive Assistants per ward across the 171 wards.
According to him, the appointments will comprise of five women, three youths and two men.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chief Uchenna Igwe and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Ben Odoh had justified the election of the Chairmen and commended the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for a successful polls.
Three of the Chairmen were elected for second term while 10 are coming in for the first term.
The local government election in Ebonyi State was conducted by EBSIEC on August 22, 2026.
