Pope Leo XIV has successfully undergone surgery to remove a growth from his lung, with the Vatican confirming that the procedure was completed as planned and without reported complications.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the operation on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy. According to the Vatican, the surgery was successful, and the Holy Father returned to his hospital room to continue his recovery.
However, a subsequent Vatican medical update revealed that tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, in the removed tissue. Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the operation.
The Pope is expected to remain in the hospital for approximately one week, while his public engagements have been suspended through October 20 to allow him time to recover.
News of the successful surgery will bring relief to Catholics and well-wishers around the world who have been praying for the health and recovery of the leader of the Catholic Church.
Let us continue to pray for Pope Leo XIV’s complete recovery and renewed strength.
