In a major boost to promote food security and agricultural productivity, the Executive Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, NWACHI, Timothy A. U. on Saturday, 26th September, 2026, flagged off the distribution of fertilizers to farmers across the Local Government Area.
The flag-off exercise, which took place at the Local Government Headquarters, Afikpo, witnessed a large turnout of farmers, traditional rulers, Coordinators of Development Centres, Councillors, Town Union Presidents, women groups and other critical stakeholders.
Speaking during the exercise, the Council Chairman said the initiative is in line with the People’s Charter of Needs agenda of His Excellency, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, which is aimed at empowering rural farmers and increasing food production at the grassroots.
He applauded Governor Nwifuru for his relentless efforts in boosting mechanized agriculture in the State and assured that the Governor’s vision will continue to be replicated at the Local Government Area.
According to him, “Agriculture remains the backbone of our economy. This fertilizer distribution is not politics; it is about ensuring that our people return to the farm, produce more and feed our families.”
The Chairman disclosed that the 4,000 bags of fertilizer will be distributed free of charge across all autonomous communities and wards in the LGA through a well-coordinated and transparent process that will ensure the commodity gets to genuine farmers at the grassroots.
He, however, warned against diversion or sale of the commodity, stating that anyone caught diverting the product will be severely dealt with.
In their separate remarks, some of the beneficiaries and traditional rulers commended Governor Nwifuru and the Council Chairman for their people-oriented leadership, describing the intervention as a genuine effort to boost food security.
They pledged their continued support for the administration of Governor Nwifuru and that of the Council Chairman to succeed.
Indeed, the atmosphere at the Council Headquarters was that of joy as farmers were seen beaming with smiles and singing songs of appreciation to Governor Nwifuru and the Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area
