Ebonyi State Governor, Rt.
Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has charged law graduates of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) to pursue excellence in their careers, uphold the dignity of the legal profession and use their knowledge to contribute to the development of Ebonyi State and Nigeria.
Nwifuru gave the charge at the LAWSA DINNER AND AWARD NIGHT, 2026 , held at Ecumenical Center, where he congratulated award recipients and urged them to recognise the responsibilities that come with their legal education.
He described law as a noble profession that offers its practitioners unique opportunities to serve society, stressing that their success would depend not only on their academic knowledge but also on their character, humility and conduct.
The governor cautioned the graduates against allowing their professional status to make them arrogant or distant from members of society and advised them to treat others with respect and remain conscious of how their behaviour could affect the public’s perception of the legal profession.
“Be mindful of how you represent yourself, how you present yourself before the public, because you are very important material to Ebonyi State Government and to the people of this great state,” he said.
Nwifuru also challenged the graduates to aim for outstanding results at the Nigerian Law School, insisting that they should not settle for average performance despite the challenges they might encounter . He expressed confidence in the quality of training provided by the university’s lecturers and encouraged the students to distinguish themselves through hard work and determination.
“You are not going to Nigeria Law School to come out with pass. I will not accept that. If one or two people can come out with first class, you are that person,” the governor declared.
The governor further commended the management of Ebonyi State University for providing opportunities for younger academics to take up leadership positions, while urging the Dean of the Faculty of Law to protect the institution’s reputation and maintain its established standards.
He also praised the university’s lecturers for their contributions to students’ development, expressing confidence that the institution would continue to produce capable graduates who would make meaningful contributions to the state and the country.
