Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has recorded a historic milestone with the swearing in of 42 of its pioneer medical graduates medical doctors, marking a significant step in the institution’s contribution to Nigeria’s health service delivery.

The induction ceremony, held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, signaled the formal admission of the graduates into the medical profession, underscoring the growing role of the relatively young federal university in strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery in the country.

Administering the oath and formally inducting the new doctors, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Prof. Fatima Kyari, described the event as historic, not only for the university but for the nation’s health sector. She said the ceremony represented the culmination of years of rigorous academic training, clinical exposure, discipline, and sacrifice by the graduates.

Prof. Kyari, who was represented by Prof. Chidimma Ogbonnaya noted that the induction of the pioneer set of doctors is a testament to AE-FUNAI’s commitment to maintaining approved standards in medical education. She commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, and the Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Paul Ezeonu, for providing visionary leadership and ensuring that the college met regulatory requirements without compromising quality.

According to her, starting and sustaining a medical college requires enormous institutional commitment, infrastructure, qualified personnel, and strict adherence to professional guidelines. She expressed satisfaction that AE-FUNAI had demonstrated capacity and dedication in training competent medical professionals.

She also acknowledged the efforts of lecturers, clinical instructors, laboratory technologists, and other support staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the pioneer set, despite prevailing economic and systemic challenges within the health and education sectors.

The MDCN Registrar urged the newly inducted doctors to uphold the ethics, dignity, and integrity of the profession, reminding them that medicine is not merely a career but a calling to serve humanity. She charged them to embrace lifelong learning, maintain high professional standards, and remain compassionate in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking further, Prof. Kyari used the occasion to highlight ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system, noting that expansion in medical training across institutions would be pursued in a structured and quality-driven manner. She linked the efforts to the broader Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which seeks to reposition the country’s health system for improved service delivery.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu described the induction as a defining moment in the history of AE-FUNAI. He expressed his gratitude to the past administrations of the university, especially Prof. Sunday Elom for laying the solid foundation that led to this milestone, noting that the establishment of the medical college and its growth and final accreditation was a testament to their tireless efforts.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement in medical education, adding that as a university, we are committed to producing professionals who are not only knowledgeable but also compassionate, skilled, and dedicated to serving humanity.

Prof. Nwachukwu encouraged the pioneer medical graduates to be above board in their practice, uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics of the profession, stating that the world needs more doctors, especially those who are equipped with the functional knowledge, relevant skill, and values to make a difference.

Earlier, the Provost of the College, Prof. Paul Ezeonu, expressed profound appreciation to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for its consistent guidance, regulatory oversight, and support in ensuring that the college maintained the required standards for medical education.

According to him, the council’s commitment to maintaining quality medical education in Nigeria played a crucial role in guiding the development of the college.

The Provost also paid tribute to the past administrations of the university, whose vision and determination laid the foundation for the establishment of the college. He specifically acknowledged the efforts of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elom, whose administration made significant strides in strengthening the college, expanding facilities, and consolidating the partnership with the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for the clinical training of the students.

He congratulated the new doctors for their resilience, discipline, and commitment throughout their training, while urging them to uphold the highest standards of honesty, responsibility, and truthfulness.
‘’Dedication to duty will distinguish you, and humility will remain the key to lasting success’’, he concluded.

Delivering the valedictory speech, the valedictorian, Dr. Igwe Ezinne Esther, expressed deep gratitude to God for guiding them through the rigorous journey of medical training, describing the induction as the realization of a dream that was nurtured through years of hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice.

She recalled the numerous challenges encountered during their journey through medical school, stating that it was not an easy one.

‘’There were moments of exhaustion, anxiety and self-doubt, but God sustained us’’, she said.

Dr. Igwe also appreciated their parents and guardians whose sacrifices, encouragement and unwavering support kept them through the long and challenging years of study. She equally urged her colleagues to leave a legacy for others to follow.

The climax of the event was induction of the pioneer medical doctors into the Medical Council and presentation of awards to best graduating students.
