Following the successful completion of a month-long executive development course at Henan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, China, the Chairman Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation and Senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Engr Kenneth Emeka Eze has returned to Beijing China on yet another official mission critical to the future of Nigeria’s digital broadcasting landscape.
This time, he is in the Chinese capital, Beijing, leading Nigerian delegation in high-level discussions aimed at the appraisal and re-negotiation of the existing Joint Venture Agreement between Nigeria’s National Television Authority (NTA) and Chinese digital broadcasting giant, StarTimes. The renewed engagement is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to fast-track the actualization of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) – a national transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting.
This move is pivotal for the modernization and expansion of the Nigerian electronic media space. The Senator’s visit marks a renewed commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure, improving content delivery, and ensuring that Nigerian households gain access to high-quality digital television services.
The Joint Venture between NTA and StarTimes, first initiated to enhance digital broadcasting reach in Nigeria, has faced calls for restructuring to ensure it aligns more closely with the evolving needs of the Nigerian populace and the strategic vision of the Federal Government. Senator Eze’s mission is therefore not only timely but also essential in ensuring that Nigeria keeps pace with global trends in digital broadcasting.
In his speech, Senator Eze emphasized the importance of transparency, sustainability, and mutual benefit in the partnership. “Nigeria stands at a critical junction in its media evolution. Our goal is to secure a fair and future-forward agreement that reflects the best interests of the Nigerian people while fostering an enduring partnership with our Chinese counterparts. Let me assure Nigerians back home that the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR is committed to improving digital infrastructure to ensure that Nigerians have access to high-quality digital television services” he noted.
The Digital Switch Over project, when fully implemented, is expected to enhance broadcasting quality, expand access to information, support content creators, and create new job opportunities in Nigeria’s media and tech sectors.
