Only three of the 13 local government Chairmen will be eligible to contest the local government election in Ebonyi State next year.
They include the incumbent chairmen of Afikpo Local Government, Timothy Nwachi, Ishielu, Peace Agwu and Onicha, Ikechukwu Ogbofia.
This is sequel to the notice of the elections issued by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) on Monday August 25, 2025.
In the notice signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Enyi Patrick and Secretary, Dr Fidelis Nwele Uguru, the local government elections have been scheduled for Saturday August 22, 2026.
The notice was issued to all registered political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Security Agencies, Inter Party Advisory Council, political stakeholders, the Press and the general public.
The EBSIEC also announced the publication of the notice in the 13 local government areas and the 171 electoral wards where elections would take place in the state.
“Pursuant to the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, the EBSIEC Law 2001 as amended, the Ebonyi State Electoral and Related Matters Law No 007 of 2025 as amended and all other powers enabling her in that behalf, the EBSIEC do hereby publish and give notice of local government elections 2026”, the Commission announced.

The local government elections in the state were held July 20, 2024 while the Chairmen were sworn in for a two year term September 1, 2024.
Outside the three chairmen of Afikpo, Ishielu and Onicha, the others would have done their second term by September next year.
They include the chairmen of Edda, Prince Chima Ekumankama, Ezza South, Euphemia Nwali, Ezza North, Ogodo Ali-Nomeh, Ohaozora Chinonso Aja and Ivo, Ajah Emmanuel.
Others are Ikwo, Sunday Nwankwo, Izzi, Emenike Steve, Abakaliki, Ebere Nwogba, Ebonyi, Chinedu Uburu and Ohaukwu, Ikechukwu Odono
